AARP Foundation
Money Management Program
Our Money Management Program best benefits low income elderly and/or mentally disabled adults who are
starting to lose or do not have the cognitive ability to manage their monthly income and bills are not being paid which puts
them at risk of losing their independence. Someone showing early signs of dementia, someone that has had a stroke
or brain injury or someone with an intellectual disability is more the type of individual that will benefit from
the way our Money Management Program is structured to work. Also, a widow whose spouse took care of all the bill paying
and is now left to take on this huge responsibility or someone that is being financially exploited are good candidates as
well. This program is accomplished by using
screened VOLUNTEERS to serve as Bill Payers and Representative Payees. The Money
Management Program is part of the AARP Foundation, AARP’s affiliated charity and Brazos Bend Guardianship Services is
the agency providing the program in the Ft. Bend County
area. All volunteers are trained and monitored. AARP offers limited insurance for the client funds handled by the volunteers.
Bill
Payers meet with the client and help them balance their check book and set up a budget so their bills will be paid. The Bill Payer does not have check signing authority.
Representative
Payees help the clients to manage the government benefit (Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Dept.
of Veterans Affairs, Railroad Retirement, Office of Personnel Management) they are receiving by developing a budget, balancing
their check book and paying bills. The volunteer will have check signing authority.
